There is no further information about which countries the people came from, other than that they had an "origin significantly further away than Finland", according to a press release from the University of Turku.

"The skulls collected from known Finnish burial sites have mostly already been reburied. We are still investigating the origins of the other deceased," says the head of the research project, Associate Professor Ulla Nordfors.

KI's anatomical collections contained human remains, primarily skulls, which were largely excavated from Finnish graves for examination by researchers in 1873. The skulls were used in anthropological studies.

KI handed over the remains to Finland in August 2024.
