According to the study, girls who are dissatisfied with their bodies receive lower grades in sports and health in sixth grade, which is the first time the grade is given.
"The grade is given during a developmentally sensitive period and children often have a great self-awareness regarding issues related to the body and appearance", says Carolina Lunde, professor of psychology, in a press release.
On the other hand, boys' negative body perception does not affect their sports grades. According to the study, this is explained by the fact that girls who are dissatisfied with their bodies avoid situations where the body is exposed, for example sports lessons, and the grade suffers.
Among students with a strong confidence in their physical ability, there is a connection with high grades in sports and health.
"This applies to both girls and boys and suggests that those who believe in themselves dare to participate more actively and show their knowledge in sports lessons", according to Carolina Lunde, who also conducted the study.
She means that the results highlight important circumstances.
"It is important for the school to know that the grade can counteract the curriculum's objectives for some children. Even if it is not possible to abolish the grades, we need to help all children feel that their body is good just the way it is", writes Carolina Lunde.
