The study randomly assigned 263 adults with social anxiety to six groups. Over nine weeks, participants received written feedback on their homework from either AI or a psychologist. All groups that received treatment improved, and the researchers found no negative effects.
A psychologist reviewed the AI responses before they were sent out, but according to the researchers, they never needed to be changed.
“We have not shown that AI can replace psychologists, and the study did not test AI working completely on its own. But if AI writes a first draft that a psychologist approves, perhaps the same psychologist can help more people,” says lead author Per Carlbring, professor of clinical psychology at Stockholm University, in a press release.
