A “new era of nuclear weapons.” This is what Finnish President Alexander Stubb fears the world has entered, after US President Donald Trump said the country will once again test nuclear bombs.

In a speech Stubb gave in Helsinki on Monday, the president said that the deterrent effect of nuclear weapons and the "strategic stability between superpowers" are changing.

We have entered a new era of nuclear weapons, where the importance of nuclear weapons has unfortunately increased, Stubb said.

Trump has claimed that Russia and China are secretly detonating nuclear bombs, and that the United States should therefore conduct nuclear tests again. The United States has not conducted such tests since 1992, and as far as is known, only North Korea has tested nuclear devices in recent years.

Although Trump's statements have since been toned down by other American representatives, they are raising concerns around the world.

How can we build deterrence together? How can we control escalation? Stubb asked rhetorically in the speech, saying that these are questions that Finland needs to consider together with its allies.
