Approximately 5,000 men between the ages of 20 and 39 are currently prescribed testosterone by doctors – an increase of over 300 percent compared to 2006, according to figures from the National Board of Health and Welfare, reports SVT .
We have become better at finding the men who actually have a deficiency, says Mikael Lehtihet, chief physician and researcher at Karolinska Institutet, to SVT.
He believes that young men's awareness has increased, which means that they are now checking their values.
However, the treatment carries risks according to the National Board of Health and Welfare and may be done unnecessarily. On various internet forums, for example, there are tips on how to lower your testosterone level so that it is easier to get the medication. The increase is also unevenly distributed in the country, with Västernorrland at the top with an increase of almost 800 percent.
