The quake had a magnitude of 7.7, according to an updated assessment from the USGS. The alarm sounded at 8 p.m. on Friday, and the earthquake was felt in Panama City, where buildings shook and people ran into the streets.

The US National Weather Service has issued a tsunami warning for a large area in the region, including Peru, Mexico and Nicaragua.
