Three of those who died in the first quake were miners who were in a shaft that collapsed in the mountains west of the town of Manay.
The earthquake is preliminary estimated to have a magnitude of 7.4 and the Philippine authorities issued a tsunami warning which was later lifted. The epicenter of the earthquake is estimated to be located a few miles outside the town of Manay in the Davao region.
A few hours later, a second warning was issued after a strong aftershock that preliminary had a magnitude of 6.9.
