The rules for winter tires on trucks are becoming tougher. Now, winter tires are required on heavy vehicles throughout the entire winter – regardless of road conditions.

The government's tightened rules will come into effect on November 1.

According to the new rules, heavy vehicles must drive with winter tires between November 10 and April 10, regardless of whether winter road conditions prevail. Buses over 3.5 tons are also included.

We have seen how poor tires affect traffic safety when trucks get stuck or drive off the road and therefore we are now moving forward with this tightening of the regulations, says Minister for Infrastructure Andreas Carlson (KD) to Sveriges Radio.

The trade organization Sveriges Åkeriföretag welcomes the change and sees clearer rules as an important measure for increased traffic safety during the winter, says CEO Oscar Hyléen in a press release.

Today's rules mean requirements for winter tires from December 1 to March 31 when winter road conditions prevail.
