Strong southerly gales have blanketed the Greek island of Crete with sand from the Sahara, turning the air orange and forcing ferries to dock and flights to be cancelled.

The Greek weather service warns of "severe weather conditions" on Thursday in parts of the country, with "prolonged and intense rain, stormy winds and probably hail."

The warning is in effect until Friday.
