Germany were on their way to missing out on the group win in the European Championship, but Niclas Füllkrug's late 1-1 equaliser against Switzerland was the rescue.

The Germans thought they had taken the lead early in the match when Robert Andrich's shot found the net. But VAR review showed that Switzerland should have had a free kick in a situation just before the goal, which was therefore disallowed.

A little later, the home crowd in Frankfurt were treated to a cold shower when Dan Ndoye neatly slotted in 1-0 for Switzerland in the 28th minute – his first international goal in his career.

Ndoye was hot and shot just a minute later, narrowly outside Manuel Neuer's post.

Germany had already secured advancement to the round of 16 before the match, but needed a point to win Group A and get a likely easier route forward in the European Championship.

But the goal was a long time coming.

Both advance

It wasn't until stoppage time that substitute Füllkrug headed in the equaliser that makes Germany win the group. Switzerland are also through, as group runners-up.

Even Hungary experienced a lovely stoppage time in the group's other match, against Scotland. Both teams were in need of a win to have a chance to advance as one of the European Championship's best third-placed teams.

The match's only goal came in the end – in the tenth minute of stoppage time. Even there, it was a substitute, Kevin Csoboth, who scored the goal.

Nasty injury

Hungary thus finish third in the group, but must wait for the resolution of the other European Championship groups to see if the team's three points (and 2-5 goal difference) are enough to advance.

The long stoppage time in the match against Scotland had its main explanation in a nasty injury that befell the Hungarians earlier in the second half.

Striker Barnabas Varga was left lying after a collision and medical staff came onto the pitch, while the entire Hungarian team quickly gathered in a circle around their teammate.

At the same time, the screens were held up to cover Varga, who was later carried off the pitch to the applause of the crowd.
