The price of North Sea oil rose 4.3 percent to $79.30 per barrel.

Wall Street closed higher on Friday, but leading Asian stock exchanges were generally lower in overnight trading. The Seoul Stock Exchange's Kospi index plunged almost 9 percent in late trading.

The market is also gearing up for Kevin Warsh's first speech as the new head of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) in Congress on Tuesday and this week's flood of interim reports, both in Stockholm and on Wall Street.

The Stockholm Stock Exchange ended last week down 0.1 percent but has risen 5.2 percent since the turn of the year.
