This means that fossil advertising is prohibited on the city's own advertising spaces, and Stockholm becomes the first municipality in the country to make such a decision.
"The city should not provide advertising space for fossil-based products and services," it says in the budget from the Social Democrats, the Green party and the Left Party for 2026.
Environment and Climate Commissioner Åsa Lindhagen (Green party) tells P4 Stockholm that a definition of what is meant by fossil advertising will be developed. However, she indicates that air travel and fossil-fuel-powered cars will be included.
"Stockholm's decision to stop fossil advertising is brave and groundbreaking. Stockholm will become an international role model along with Amsterdam, The Hague, Sydney and other cities," comments Anna Jonsson from the environmental organization New Weather Sverige in a press release.
