After being closed for Ascension Day, the Stockholm Stock Exchange rose sharply at the open.
However, the mood then declined and at the close the OMXS index had fallen 0.3 percent.
It was also grim across Europe, where the stock exchanges in London, Paris and Frankfurt all closed sharply lower.
On the OMXS30 list, Boliden fared the worst, losing 5.6 percent, followed by ball-bearing manufacturer SKF, down 3.1 percent.
In the opposite direction, clothing giant H&M rose 2.1 percent.
The price of oil rose during the day; at 5:30 p.m. local time in Sweden, a barrel of North Sea oil was trading for just over $108 per barrel.
