Every year, over 2,000 Stockholmers turn to the region for help conceiving a child. Around 355 of them need donated sperm. In Stockholm, sperm is donated by around 25 people per year, which is why the region has started buying donated sperm from Denmark.

This may conflict with Swedish family law, which states that a donor may father children in a maximum of six families.

The commercial Danish sperm banks, on the other hand, sell to all of Europe, which means that a donor can become a genetic parent in up to 25 families in total, says Tekla Lind, chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital to Mitti .
