The 30-year-old Ethiopian is said to have started feeling unwell during a training session, whereupon she was taken to hospital, where she later died.

Shewarge Alene had already achieved great successes on the marathon distance before the victory at the end of May. On 26 marathons, it was twelve wins and a further nine podium finishes, according to Runners World.
