It had been rumored that Stockholm was in a good position to host the European group in the World Cup – but when the official announcement came on Monday, Prague took the lead.

The North American group will be played in Calgary and the semifinals and final in Edmonton.

The tournament will be decided in February 2028.

Eight nations will participate, but which ones have not been announced. The NHL and the NHL players' union, which organize the tournament, have not decided whether Russia will be allowed to participate.

"We'll see how things develop," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said at a press conference.

Sweden has previously agreed to participate.

This will be the first time the tournament has been played since 2016. Last year, a mini-World Cup, the Four Nations, was played in Montreal and Boston, where Sweden came third.
