He was a part of the "golden generation" in England. But some success in the football national team did not come for Steven Gerrard & Co. We were selfish losers.

Liverpool legend was successful in the club team. Cup trophies were lifted and even Champions League ended with a final victory.

In England's national team, existence was different.

Steven Gerrard had players like Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, John Terry and Frank Lampard by his side – together they were part of the "golden generation" in the 2000s. Despite the star status of the squad, success was absent. The national team never reached further than the quarterfinals in a championship.

Gerrard thinks he knows why.

We were all selfish losers, says the 45-year-old in Rio Ferdinand's podcast.

He means that the friendship that exists between the players today did not exist before.

So why did we not have the same connection when we were 20, 21, 22, 23? Was it selfishness? Was it rivalry?

It was due to the culture in England. We were not friendly with each other or cohesive. We were not a team. We never became a really good, strong team at any time.

England's men's national team has, during the two most recent European Championship finals, reached the final but is still waiting for its first title since the World Championship 1966.
