Detroit icon Yzerman's announcement comes just a few weeks after team captain Dylan Larkin's desire to be traded became known.
Yzerman will now instead be an adviser to CEO Chris Ilitch, the club wrote in a press release.
“It’s clear that as an organization, we’re not where we and our fans expect us to be,” Ilitch says.
Yzerman was involved in drafting the team's Swedish star Lucas Raymond in 2020. As a player, he was with the club for 22 years and led the team to three Stanley Cup titles.
