Stellan Skarsgård is nominated for the film world's most prestigious award for his role as director Gustav in "Sentimental Value." The Norwegian film received a whopping nine nominations.
"Nine nominations! Is that a Scandinavian record?" exclaims Skarsgård.
Skarsgård has been seen as a favorite to win an Oscar after recently winning a Golden Globe for his performance and also being awarded the European Film Award (EFA). But he has not felt any pressure.
No, it's felt like climbing step after step. Every step has felt so good.
“White evening”
Only one other Swedish male actor has previously been nominated for an Oscar. Max von Sydow was nominated for both “Pelle the Conqueror” in 1988 and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” in 2011.
"I read some nice words he said about me the other day. It feels like he's passing the baton on now," says Skarsgård.
Skarsgård has spent a lot of time in the US promoting the film and his Oscar chances. Now the campaign continues until the gala on March 15.
But first he's going to celebrate, without champagne.
No, I think it will be a quiet evening. It's needed after the Golden Globes and the EFA.
Double up for Göransson
Skarsgård is not the only Swede to celebrate. Composer Ludwig Göransson received two nominations. Göransson has already won two Oscars, in 2018 for “Black Panther” and in 2023 for “Oppenheimer”.
Now Göransson is nominated for both the film score for "Sinners" and the song "I lied to you" from the film, which Göransson co-wrote with Raphael Saadiq.
Record for “Sinners”
“Sinners” also sets a record with its total of 16 nominations. Never before has any film had so many chances to win at the Oscars. The previous high was 14.
In addition to Skarsgård, "Sentimental Value" also has chances to win for Renate Reinsve in the lead role and for Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning in the best supporting actress category.
"Sentimental Value" could also win best film, best international film and awards for best director and screenplay, among other things.
The Norwegian success continues with “The Ugly Stepsister”, which received a nomination for best makeup and hair. There, the Norwegian Oscar success spills over to Sweden, as Swedish actors Isac Calmroth, Malte Gårdinger, Adam Lundgren and Cissi Forss play roles in the horror film.
The Oscars will take place on March 15 in Los Angeles.
