The gaming company Valve announces that a new console called the Steam Machine will compete with Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation, reports the BBC, among others.

Valve launched the Steam platform in 2003 and since then it has grown to become the world's largest distribution platform for PC games. Early next year, the Steam Machine console will be released. It is "optimized for gaming" and is designed for gamers who want to be able to play PC games on their TV, but also use the console as a computer.

It runs on the Linux-based Steam OS, has AMD graphics, and supports 4K and 60 frames per second. The controller has two large touchpads that double as a mouse. Valve has also unveiled the Steam Frame wireless VR headset.

The Steam Machine is being called a "spiritual successor" to the console of the same name that was launched in 2014, but which then had difficulty breaking into the market. The new machine is set to go on sale early next year. The price is still unknown.
