Housing loans accounted for 83 percent of total household lending and consumer loans for 6 percent.
According to the statistics, fixed-rate mortgage rates for households are also rising. The average interest rate on loans with fixed terms of over 1 year and up to 5 years increased to 3.18 percent in August, from 3.15 percent in July.
"We see that fixed mortgage rates for new agreements are rising in August. For fixed-rate periods between 1 and 5 years, this is the first time since April 2026 that mortgage rates have increased," says Andrea Schöldtz, economist at Statistics Sweden, in a press release.
The average variable mortgage interest rate, however, fell slightly and stood at 2.73 percent in August.
