This weekend's Ukrainian attack on a dam in Russian Belgorod has caused water masses to flow uncontrollably. A state of emergency has been declared, according to Russian media.

Around 1,000 inhabitants have been evacuated, according to Governor Vjatjeslav Gladkov, as reported by the independent The Moscow Times.

In video clips published in pro-Russian Telegram channels, water can be seen leaking through a cracked sluice gate and flooded trenches that are said to have been used by Russian soldiers. BBC has verified parts of the footage.

The attack on the Belgorod dam, which is described as a strategically important reservoir, has according to The Kyiv Independent hit hard on Russian military logistics and stranded several Russian units.

A Ukrainian commander has confirmed the attack.
