Actors such as Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett, and artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Common, and R.E.M., are backing the "Theft is not Innovation" campaign to protest AI.

The American initiative has so far collected over 700 signatures, many of them actors, artists and writers, The Wrap reports.

The message is that human work should not be used by AI without permission or consideration of copyright law, something several of the largest tech companies are accused of doing.

"Artists, writers, and creators of all kinds are united under a simple message: stealing our work is not innovation. It is not progress. It is theft - plain and simple," the campaign said in a statement.

Behind the campaign is a coalition of authors, unions and industry organizations.
