Starmer hopes for an expanded cooperation between the UK and the EU on issues concerning defense, energy, and trade.

I hope that the last seven months have shown a new kind of rapprochement, a new tone, and a new relationship, said Starmer.

The two leaders discussed common standpoints and challenges, such as the development in the Russian invasion war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.

Labour leader Starmer has dismissed the idea of the UK reapplying for membership in the European Union, but has simultaneously clearly marked that he wants to improve relations after frosty years with the Conservative Tories in power in London.

Scholz stated after a joint walk on the grounds in Buckinghamshire, England, and a lunch that the meeting was "a good sign of the good relations between the two countries and between us two".

The two leaders are traveling to Belgium for an EU meeting on Monday for continued attempts to improve contacts between the UK and the EU.
