Up to 150,000 people marched on Saturday in a demonstration organized by the high-profile right-wing extremist activist Tommy Robinson, under the slogan "Unite the Kingdom” ("Unite the kingdom").
At the same time, around 5,000 people gathered for an anti-racist counter-demonstration.
During the day, it went largely calmly, but towards the late afternoon, tensions arose.
In total, 26 police officers were injured, of which four seriously, when they were subjected to blows and kicks as they tried to keep the large march at a distance from the counter-demonstrators.
The Prime Minister emphasizes that all citizens have an inviolable right to protest peacefully.
But we cannot accept attacks on police who are just doing their job, or that people feel unsafe on our streets because of their background or skin color, says Keir Starmer, according to BBC.
Our flag symbolizes the diversity of our country and we will never let those who use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division tear it out of our hands.
24 people were arrested in connection with the violence on Saturday. The police are working to identify more of those involved in the disturbances and say they expect to make more arrests in the future.
