The Starlink satellite network was down on Thursday evening. After around 2.5 hours, the problem was mostly resolved, according to Michael Nicolls, a high-ranking official within Starlink, reports CNBC.

Over 60,000 users reported network problems via the website Downdetector.

Starlink is owned by Elon Musk, and is used by, among others, Ukraine's defense forces – and has played an important role for the country's war communication. Starlink works through thousands of small satellites, and is therefore an alternative when infrastructure for internet connection on the ground has been knocked out.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian digitalization minister sent a distress call to Musk, who responded by activating Starlink over Ukraine.

In the beginning of 2025, Ukraine investigated alternatives to Starlink, since media reports then claimed that the USA threatened to cut off Ukraine's access to the network.
