The film, which will be directed by Shawn Levy ("Deadpool & Wolverine", "Stranger Things"), will take place about five years after the events of the 2019 "Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker" and is described as "a completely new adventure with new characters that takes place during a time period that has not yet been explored on the white screen".
The fans cheered when Gosling and Levy made a surprise appearance at a Star Wars event in Japan on Friday, where the project was presented.
Dressed in a baseball cap with the slogan "Never tell me the odds", Gosling said:
I think that's exactly the advice we need when we embark on this journey.
Director Shawn Levy also touched on the terrifying aspect of taking on a concept with such a rabid fan base.
It's scary. You're nervous and want to do it well. But we have a feeling that with this story, with this collaboration, we can get it right.
"Star Wars: Starfighter" is one of several upcoming films in the series. "The Mandalorian & Grogu", which is based on a Disney+ series starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, will premiere next year, and two more unnamed films by directors Taika Waititi and James Mangold are also in the works.
