The original painting, which has been reproduced as a well-known movie poster, is considered to have contributed to the success of the film series almost 50 years ago.
On Wednesday, it went under the hammer for the equivalent of approximately 36 million kronor. According to the AP news agency, that is the highest price ever paid for an item related to the "Star Wars" films.
Painted by artist and movie poster designer Tom Jung, the work first appeared in newspaper ads on May 13, 1977, barely two weeks before George Lucas' space epic hit theaters. It also graced billboards and newspaper ads.
The painting shows Luke Skywalker holding up a lightsaber behind Princess Leia, with the villain Darth Vader in the background.
