Star director suspected of being murdered in his home

Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner have been found dead in their home in the United States, several media outlets report. Police suspect murder.

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood on Sunday afternoon, local time, TMZ reports.

"We are devastated by this sudden loss," the family said in a statement, according to CNN.

Police have opened a murder investigation, and relatives have been questioned. The couple had been stabbed, AP reports. There are no signs of a break-in at the property where the Reiners lived, police sources tell the Los Angeles Times.

No one arrested

"The police are not currently looking for any specific person who is a suspect," said investigator Alan Hamilton at a press conference.

No one has been arrested, no one has been questioned as a suspect, he says.

The news of Rob Reiner's death has shocked Hollywood. The director was also politically active in the Democratic Party, and both Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newson have commented on the death, as has former President Barack Obama .

"Michelle and I are devastated by the tragic passing of Rob and his beloved wife Michele," Obama wrote on X.

Son of comedian

Rob Reiner was born into the entertainment world as the son of famous comedian Carl Reiner and is best known as the director of the classic romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally" from 1989.

He has also directed the successful films "Stand by Me", "Spinal Tap", "On Honor and Conscience" and "The President and Miss Wade". As recently as last fall, a sequel to "Spinal Tap" was released.

But his career began as an actor, and Rob Reiner had his breakthrough in the television series "All in the Family", a long-running series on American television in the 1970s.

Rob Reiner turned 78.
