This year's recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors have now received their medals during a ceremony in the Oval Office.

This year's nominees are actor Sylvester Stallone, rock band Kiss, singer Gloria Gaynor, singer George Strait and Broadway star Michael Crawford.

This is perhaps the most successful and illustrious group of Kennedy Center Honors ever assembled, said US President Donald Trump during the ceremony, according to Billboard .

The president has previously said he was "98 percent" involved in the selection of nominees. During his first term, Donald Trump skipped the annual awards ceremony, but this year he has made several changes to the cultural institution. Among other things, he has replaced large parts of the board and appointed himself as the new chairman.

Since 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors have been awarded, as a kind of "hall of fame" for cultural figures.
