Trial Begins for Man Accused of Stalking Skier Frida Karlsson

When ski star Frida Karlsson stands at the starting line for the charity race, a man calls out to her. She immediately recognizes the voice – and soon he is running beside her. It is the 64-year-old man who has stalked her for nearly a year and a half.

The idea was that Frida Karlsson would take it easy during that race in Hagaparken in Stockholm in May 2024, but after a few hundred meters, the man suddenly runs alongside her. Karlsson increases the pace and he can't keep up - she doesn't see him again during the race.

The 64-year-old man was recently charged with unlawful harassment of Frida Karlsson since October 2023, and on Wednesday, the trial against him begins in Ångermanland District Court.

Called 207 times

During the summer, the man also shows up during a training session on Hallstaberget in Sollefteå and in August of the same year, he suddenly stands outside her residence in Östersund.

I was there and drove past her, and she was standing on the street. Then I rolled down the window, since we had talked and had a nice time, so I didn't think it was anything strange, says the 64-year-old in a police interrogation.

Frida Karlsson, however, has never responded to any of the 207 calls the man made to her - nor to his numerous SMS messages. The majority of them she has never seen, since Karlsson has blocked the man's number.

I have communicated via SMS, and she via pictures. I found it very creative and entertaining, says the man.

He has believed that he had a romantic relationship with Frida Karlsson. When he sent an SMS, the 64-year-old claims that the skiing star responded to him by posting pictures on social media.

She has responded within an hour with pictures, he claims.

Thousands of pictures

In the man's phone, the police have found over 7,300 pictures, most of which depict Frida Karlsson. They were retrieved from various Instagram accounts.

He comes from and lives in central Sweden, but through bank statements, it can be seen that he has made purchases in locations north of where Frida Karlsson was at the same time, according to the preliminary investigation.

The man has also bought a round-trip ticket to Spanish Tenerife. That's where Frida Karlsson was on a longer training camp during the fall of 2024 to rehabilitate her injured foot.

Somewhere, he manages to circumvent the blockage, and Frida Karlsson hears a voice message where the 64-year-old says it will be fun to come there.

When the plane takes off, he is not on board.

Broke contact ban

"I'm ashamed, but I have to admit that I missed the plane to Tenerife! Unbelievable, but true. Sorry", he writes in an SMS.

That message was sent after he was notified of a contact ban against Karlsson in November last year, but the man has broken it several times.

Among other things, by sending a handwritten letter to Frida Karlsson. The letter, addressed to the 25-year-old's parents, was dated February 14 - more than three weeks before the skiing star wins World Championship gold on the 5-mile race in Trondheim.

A few days later, the 64-year-old is arrested, and since February 21, he has been detained.

The 64-year-old man is charged with unlawful harassment of skiing star Frida Karlsson between October 22, 2023, and February 21, 2025.

The trial against the man is being held on Wednesday in Ångermanland District Court in Härnösand. Only one day of proceedings is planned.

Neither Frida Karlsson nor the accused is present in the courtroom - they will both be heard via link.

The man has had a contact ban against Frida Karlsson since November 16, 2024, but he has broken it several times.
