Mykolas Alekna announced on Instagram that he tore his chest muscle during a workout last week. He has since undergone surgery in Oregon, United States, where he studies and trains.
Now recovery awaits Daniel Ståhl's great rival.
"I will come back stronger," wrote Alekna.
His trainer Mantas Jusis announced on his social media that Alekna's surgery was successful, and that he now faces a recovery period of four to six months.
The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, England, will take place in just under five months, August 10–16.
Alekna won Olympic silver in Paris, has won medals at three consecutive World Championships, and holds the world record in the discus at 75.56 meters.
