Last year, 4,500 thefts were reported to police in schools, libraries, after-school centres and similar environments, according to SSF.
New rules requiring students' mobile phones to be collected at the start of the school day may reduce the risk of phones being stolen. At the same time, the school is then responsible for the security of the phones.
A couple of tips for protecting yourself are not to leave valuables unattended and to label your belongings so they can be more easily identified if they are lost.
Talking to your children about the risk of theft can make a big difference, said Jacek Paszkowski, head of advice at SSF, in a press release.
