The investment runs for four years and is important for growth in advanced wear-resistant steels and protective steels, the steel manufacturer said in a statement.

“This new quenching line will initially add approximately 100,000 tons of capacity and will enable us to meet the most advanced customer needs,” says Per Elfgren, head of SSAB's Special Steels business area.

Production is scheduled to start in 2030.

A week ago, news broke that SSAB's transition to more fossil-free operations in Oxelösund was being delayed. Work on the power line to the electric arc furnace is taking time.

Commissioning of the furnace was planned for early next year.
