A former heavyweight within the Spanish socialist party, Santos Cerdán, has been deprived of his freedom after allegations of corruption.

Earlier in June, the Spanish police conducted a search of the party's headquarters in Madrid after Cerdán and the former transport minister José Luis Ábalos were suspected of having received bribes in connection with procurement procedures.

Sources within the Spanish judiciary say that a judge has ordered Cerdán to be deprived of his freedom because otherwise there would be a risk that he would try to flee or destroy evidence.

Cerdán denies the allegations and says that he is exposed to a political plot.
