Spanish police open manslaughter investigation after footballer Jesús de Miguel dies

Spanish police have opened a preliminary investigation into involuntary manslaughter following the death of footballer Jesús de Miguel.

Tenerife's Jesús de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the Spanish second division on Monday night. De Miguel was left lying on the pitch and received medical treatment after other players quickly called for help.

De Miguel's condition was initially described as "stable but serious", but on Tuesday morning it was announced that he had died, aged 30.

Spanish police have now opened a preliminary investigation into the incident, but chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui has said it will be difficult to convict anyone of a crime.
