Spanish Police Clear Madrid Housing Protest Camp in Pre-Dawn Raid

Spanish police have cleared a protest camp in central Madrid, El País reports. The site had been occupied for just over a month in protest against the government's housing policy.

Shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Madrid's Puerta del Sol square was cordoned off and police entered the tents. A total of 334 people were reportedly evacuated.

“It happened very quickly, almost instantaneously. Before I knew it, I was out in the square. Some resisted, but it was pointless,” protester Rafa Quispe told El País.

Two people were arrested for disobedience, but police said everything went smoothly. However, the organizers accused police of using violence in a post on Telegram and reported that several people had been injured by blows or tear gas, AFP reported.

The camp was set up on September 26 after a protest against Spain's housing crisis. The catalyst was the eviction of an 87-year-old woman in the capital.
