Spanish unions are calling off a planned train strike after demands for safety measures were approved following the two fatal train accidents in January.

"We have reached a milestone in terms of railway safety," says a spokesperson for the Semaf union.

The agreement with the government contains 25 points and involves promises of investments of 1.8 billion euros, including improved maintenance, increased staffing and other safety measures.

On January 18, 46 people died in a train derailment and collision in Andalusia. Just two days later, one person died in a commuter train accident in Catalonia, caused by a collapsed wall.
