A Spanish court has ruled that the American Facebook owner Meta must pay local media 479 million euros, equivalent to around 5.2 billion Swedish kronor, in compensation for unfair competition.

According to the decision from the Commercial Court in Madrid, Meta has gained a “significant competitive advantage” by violating EU data protection laws.

The company was sued by a Spanish media organization representing over 80 Spanish media outlets. The organization claims that Meta systematically violated GDPR laws between May 2018 and July 2023.
