At a press conference in Madrid together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Sánchez says that "your fight is ours."
Almost half of the aid, 300 million euros, will go to the purchase of “new defense equipment,” according to the Spanish prime minister. 215 million euros are earmarked for the production of anti-drone systems and radar surveillance, and 100 million will go to a NATO-led initiative to provide Ukraine with air defense systems.
"Ukraine truly appreciates Spain's willingness to continue providing us with assistance," Zelenskyy writes on X.
The two not only talked about defense and the war against Russia, they also visited the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, where Zelenskyy saw Pablo Picasso's famous painting "Guernica." Sánchez called the painting, which shows German bombers reducing the Basque town of Guernica to ruins in 1937, "a universal symbol of cruelty."
In April 2022, shortly after Russia's full-scale attack, Zelenskyy drew parallels between the bombing of Guernica and Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
