During the coup attempt, six years after the death of dictator Franco, the parliament in Madrid was stormed by rebel Civil Guards led by Lieutenant Colonel Tejero.
The members of parliament were held hostage for almost a day. The siege did not end until it became clear that Spain's then-King Juan Carlos, Franco's designated successor, did not support the coup.
Tejero was sentenced to 30 years in prison, but was released in 1996 after serving 15 years of the sentence.
The announcement of Tejero's death comes on the same day that Spain's leftist government released classified documents linked to the events of February 23, 1981.
Antonio Tejero was 93 years old.
