According to Spain's Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, the country has an obligation to help the ICC (International Criminal Court) gather evidence of human rights violations in Gaza.
Therefore, a Spanish working group will now be formed to assist the ICC in its investigation into, among other things, war crimes in Gaza.
Previously, the ICC has issued arrest warrants against Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Spain has also joined another investigation handled by the ICJ (International Court of Justice) in The Hague, which concerns genocide in Gaza. In broad terms, one can say that ICC cases focus on suspected individuals, while the ICJ handles allegations against states.
The investigations have encountered strong resistance from Israel and its closest ally, the USA.
