The average temperature on mainland Spain was 22.5 degrees Celsius last month, according to the state meteorological agency Aemet, which has kept temperature records since 1961.

This is marginally higher than the average for the summer months of June, July and August during the 1991–2020 reference period.

On September 3, temperatures reached 45.7 degrees Celsius in El Granado, near Spain’s southwest coast, a new September record.

The summer also set new heat records in Spain, with several extreme heat waves.
