A 16-day long heat wave with forest fires and deaths as a result. The past summer was the warmest measured in Spain according to a new report.

It is the country's national weather agency AEMET, which publishes new data. The average temperature this summer was 24.2 degrees, which beats the previous record from 2022. It is also the highest average temperature in the country since measurements began in 1961.

Nine of the ten warmest summers have occurred during the 2000s. According to official figures, around 1,100 people died as a result of this year's heatwave, most of them people over 65 years.

Since 1971, Spain has had 77 heatwaves, five of which have occurred since 2019.

We are really in a trend towards much warmer summers, said Ruben del Campo, spokesperson for AEMET, at a press conference.
