Spain continues to reap football successes. After the country's football men won the European Championship gold, the U23 team now also won the Olympic Games gold – within a span of barely a month.
But it was a hard-won victory when the team defeated France in the Olympic Games final after extra time.
It looked like it would be all over after regular time, but after referee Ramon Abatti pointed to the penalty spot in the 90th minute, France's Jean-Philippe Mateta could roll in the equalizer, 3–3, and take it to extra time.
But Spain would flex their muscles once again.
In the 100th minute, substitute striker Sergio Camello scored the decisive goal, and when Abatti then put the whistle to his mouth and blew for the last time, it was the Spaniards who could celebrate.
Spain won in the end with 5–3, after a concluding goal by the same Camello.
Spain took its first gold on the men's side in the Olympic Games since the home games in Barcelona 1992. The team also got its revenge after the final loss in the Tokyo Olympic Games 2021.
