This compares with 4.3 percent in August and an average forecast among analysts of 4.6 percent in September. Core inflation rose to 3.1 percent, from 2.9 percent. The average forecast was 3.0 percent.
According to the EU-harmonised measure, inflation rose to 5.0 percent, the highest level since February 2023. The expectation was 4.9 percent, and in August inflation according to this measure was 4.6 percent.
Spain is the first of the major EU countries to release inflation figures for September. On Wednesday, corresponding figures will be released from France, Italy and Germany, and on Friday September figures for the entire eurozone will be released.
The inflation target in the eurozone is 2.0 percent.
