Journalists who had made their way to the training facility where Spain was to train on Saturday were immediately greeted with a message:
"The media representatives must return to shelter," officials announced, according to the newspaper Marca.
The Spanish national team waited for a while, but the decision was eventually made to cancel the training session.
"The Spanish national team's training in New Jersey has been canceled in accordance with US thunderstorm safety protocols. The players will instead conduct an indoor warm-up session," the Spanish Football Federation wrote in a statement.
Argentina is in the same area, and Argentinian TyC Sports says the team started the day with a gym session and hopes to conduct an outdoor session later if the weather improves.
The final between the teams will be played at 9:00 PM on Sunday.
