Spain is advancing to the quarterfinals of the European Championship in football.
The team turned a deficit against European Championship debutant Georgia into a 4–1 victory.
Now, a major clash awaits against host nation Germany in the quarterfinals.
Spain was a heavy favorite to advance from the round of 16 against European Championship debutant Georgia – it was a major upset that the team even advanced from the group stage.
So when Georgia took the lead in the 18th minute, after Otar Kakabadze sent a ball into the Spanish penalty area and a Spanish defender deflected it into their own goal, it was probably a surprise to many.
However, the Georgian lead would not last. Just before halftime, Spain equalized through Rodri, and the teams went into the break tied.
In the beginning of the second half, Georgia was close to retaking the lead again. Once again, Kvaratskhelia was involved, as he noticed from his own half that the Spanish goalkeeper was far out on the field and hit a long ball that just went outside the post.
Instead, it was Spain that scored just three minutes later to make it 2–1, through Fabián Ruiz, who headed in a cross from the 16-year-old super talent Lamine Yamal.
With just over a quarter of the match remaining, Nico Williams sealed the round of 16 win when he scored 3–1 for Spain, and in the 84th minute, Dani Olmo could set the final score at 4–1.
In the quarterfinals, Spain will face host nation Germany.
