In Spain, healthcare has increased preparedness for heatstroke, especially among children, the elderly and the chronically ill.
According to the forecast from the Portuguese National Meteorological Institute, the heat wave will hit on Saturday, and an orange warning - the second highest - applies to most of the country. Just over 40 degrees is expected in the south, the centrally located region of Tejo and the Douro Valley in the north.
On Sunday, it may become even warmer in Portugal. In the capital Lisbon, 42 degrees are expected. The risk of fire on the Algarve coast, so popular among tourists, is high.
In southern France, an orange weather warning applies in four regions for temperatures of 35-39 degrees, and more regions are expected to be affected.
