South Korea’s former President Yoon Suk-Yeol gets seven more years in prison for martial law attempt

The sentence now determined concerns, among other things, forged signatures and that Yoon used bodyguards to try to prevent himself from being arrested afterwards.

The former head of state is already locked up, having been sentenced to life imprisonment for rebellion.

It was a very dramatic 24 hours in South Korea in December 2024, when Yoon tried to strengthen his grip on power by declaring martial law. However, parliament managed to rally to vote down the measure after just six hours.
